A lower division survey of the intersection between Native Peoples and the United States from contact through the present. I originally taught this course at West Hills.
This class presents a range of contemporary American Indian/Native American/First Nation social issues. In analyzing contemporary Native American issues, students will use a social science approach within the context of Native society. The social issues examined will include tribal sovereignty and politics, assimilation policies, cultural genocide, internal colonialism, religion, health issues, environmental problems, mass media, education, gender issues, American Indian activism, and economic remedy initiatives
Syllabus
This course does not utilize a standard text book. Instead, the course is based around a series of lectures and readings fo discussion. These readings may change. Check the most recent syllabus for the current list of readings.
